영국에서 한 남성이 오랜 연인에게 이별을 통보 받은 후, 그녀와의 전화통화를 하던 도중 자살을 하는 사건이 일어났다.

현지 언론이 11일 (현지시간) 보도한 바에 따르면 여자친구와의 이별로 인해 자살한 것으로 추정되는 A씨(20)에 대한 사인규명이 이날 열렸다고 한다. A씨는 작년 10월 자신의 전 여자친구 B씨 (21)와 통화를 하다가 그대로 자신의 차를 절벽 밑으로 몰아 목숨을 끊었다고 알려졌다.

당국은 당시 상황과 그가 사망 직전 남긴 문자 등으로 보아 그가 자살했다고 추정했다.

A씨가 B씨에게 마지막 남긴 말은 “전화해줘서 다행이다. 이 것 좀 들어봐”였다. B씨는 이후 부스럭거리는 소리와 커다란 비명소리를 들었고, 곧 전화기가 꺼졌다.

공포에 질린 B씨는 급히 긴급구조센터에 연락을 했고, 구조원들은 얼마 지나지 않아 와이트 섬에 있는 한 절벽 아래에서 추락사한 A씨의 시신을 발견했다.

B씨의 증언에 따르면 사건은 그녀가 4년간 교제를 해온 A씨에게 이별을 통보한지 얼마 지나지 않아 일어났다고 한다. 두 사람 사이에서는 아이까지 두 명 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

A씨는 사망하기 20분 전 친구들과 친척들에게 그의 전 여자친구가 자신을 “미치게 만들었다”고 하는 문자 메시지를 보냈다. 그는 이 메시지에서 “내 아이들이 내 탓이라고 생각하게 하지 마. 그녀 때문이야, 그녀는 독(poison)이야.”라고 말했다.

A씨는 부검결과 사망 당시 혈중 알코올 수치가 법적으로 허용되는 수치의 두 배에 달했는데, 당국은 어린 나이에 아버지가 된 부담과 연인과의 이별 등 스트레스가 복합적으로 작용해 그가 극단적인 선택을 한 것으로 보인다고 말했다.

His former girlfriend testified that the man’s last words were “I’m glad you called, listen to this.” Then she heard a s sound and loud screaming.

She called emergency services, who found the man’s body on the rocks below a cliff on the Isle of Wight.

The incident happened just minutes after the couple had ended their four-year relationship.

The man left a text message to his friend and relatives 20 minutes before his death, claiming that her ex-girlfriend had driven him insane. “Don’t let my kids think that I was the one. It’s her – pure poison,” he wrote in the message.

Coroners said that he was drunk at the time and that alcohol coupled with stress may have caused him to lose control of his actions.
