The Japanese Embassy in Seoul has lodged a complaint on South Korea’s funding of the local War and Women’s Human Rights Museum, stating that content regarding the so-called “comfort women” in the exhibit did not comply with Japan’s stance.

The museum celebrated its grand open early this month, established by the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan in order to support compensation for the South Korean women who were forced to become sex slaves for the Japanese military during the World War II.

According to Japan’s Sankei newspaper, an official of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul visited Korea’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday to lodge the protest, saying that the honor and dignity of Japan and its people were unjustly damaged by the comfort women monument, erected in front of the Japanese Embassy. A similar statue is being exhibited at the museum.

The Korean government has given 500 million won in financial support to the museum.

Rep. Shigeru Ishibaof Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party met with Chief Cabinet Secretary Fujimura Osamu on Thursday to demand that Palisades Park, New Jersey in the U.S., remove the momument remembering the Korean victims of sex slavery.

Ishibaof demanded the city provide historical proof to back the wordings engraved on the monument -- “for the women and girls kidnapped by the imperial Japanese army.“
