South Korea’s largest carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. on Thursday launched its new fuel-efficient Accent subcompact model on the domestic market.

The new “Blue Saver” model of the popular small-sized car can run 17.7 kilometers on a liter of gasoline compared to 16.7 kilometers for the conventional 1.6-liter engine Accent.

“The excellent fuel economy has been achieved by incorporating the advanced idle stop and go system in the vehicle that cuts back on fuel consumption when the car is not moving,” the carmaker said.

It said the advanced idle stop and go (ISG) system causes the engine to be turned off if the driver pushes down on the break peddle. The car starts automatically if the break peddle is pushed down again.

Hyundai said the Accent is the first subcompact car to have the advanced ISG system installed.

The four-door model of the Accent will be sold for 15.8 million won ($14,700), with the five-door version to cost 16.10 million won, the carmaker said.
