Iran threatened to boycott the 2012 London Olympic Games unless its logo is changed, insisting that the games’ logo symbolizes Israel, according to news reports.
A formal letter of complaint was sent to the International Olympic Committee by the Iranian committee over the logo which it claims spells out “Zion,” a biblical term referring to Jerusalem.
Iranian Students News Agency, a government-supported organization, said “As internet documents have proved, using the word Zion in the logo of the 2012 Olympic Games is a disgracing action and against the Olympics’ valuable mottos.”
The IOC claimed it was surprised to get the letter, as the logo was announced back in 2007. A spokesman said, “The London 2012 logo represents the figure 2012, nothing else,” according to the Guardian.
