Hyundai Heavy Industries won awards at the 2011 Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, the world’s largest shipbuilding firm said Wednesday.

The winning products were two types of HiMSEN medium speed marine diesel engine and ship monitoring system ACONIS-DS (advanced control & integration system), the firm said.

The HiMSEN engine is an environmentally friendly model which boasts higher output with lower fuel consumption, according to Hyundai Heavy. The engine’s slick and solid design was highly rated for being innovative.

The engine has also won prizes at International Forum Design Award in 2010 and Red Dot awards of Germany in 2009.

The ACONIS monitoring system, meanwhile, received favorable responses at the event for its user-friendly design characterized by high-intensity LEDs and a high-strength acrylic front panel.

“Consumer standards for designs have become much higher in the heavy industry in recent years. Hyundai Heavy has been devoted to creating globally competitive designs since establishing a design research center for the first time in the local industry in 2000,” a Hyundai Heavy official said.
